Together towards better sexual health: Reflections from the ICEX Seminar in Finland

Finnish team members from Turku UAS and Linnasmäki Institute

On May 14, 2025, the national ICEX project seminar “With Knowledge and Skill – Sexual Health for Migrants” brought together a diverse group of participants at Turku University of Applied Sciences’ Kupittaa campus in Finland. The event welcomed adult migrants, professionals, and students to explore how sexual health can be promoted in a culturally sensitive and inclusive way.

A space for dialogue and learning

The afternoon featured insightful and thought-provoking presentations. Mina Zandkarimi from the Family Federation of Finland opened the discussion by addressing how sexual rights can be brought into integration work. Her talk emphasized the importance of creating safe spaces for open dialogue, especially when working with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.
Tawar Salari, a midwife and Master’s student in Nursing Sciences at University of Turku, shared her experiences and perspectives on culturally sensitive encounters in healthcare. Her presentation highlighted the importance of empathy, active listening, and understanding cultural contexts when supporting clients in matters related to sexual health.
Representatives from Turku UAS and Linnasmäki Institute also took the stage to present the outcomes of the ICEX project. The seminar showcased the project’s digital educational package and evidence-based eHandbook, both designed to support sexual health education for migrants and the professionals who work with them.

Key takeaways

Throughout the seminar, one message stood out clearly: there is a growing need for accessible, respectful, and culturally aware sexual education. Equally important is the continuous development of professionals’ skills to ensure they can provide inclusive and non-judgmental support.
The atmosphere during the event was warm, engaging, and filled with meaningful conversations. Participants left with new insights, practical tools, and a shared commitment to advancing sexual health for all—regardless of background.
